DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson wrestling team will head into the post-season this Saturday, March 7 when they head to Charleston, S.C. to take part in the 2009 Southern Conference Championships.
The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday from McAlister Fieldhouse on the campus of The Citadel. Following the weigh-in process, action will kick off with the preliminary round at 11 a.m., with the semifinals scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., and the final matches to start at 7 p.m.
The Wildcats will be led by five wrestlers who recorded over 30 points this season, including Alex Radsky and David DeCamp, who are tied for the team lead with 39 points during the regular season. Vitaly Radsky sits just two points back in second place on the squad with 37, followed by freshman Tyler Mullen's 34 and Sam O'Hair's 31.
DeCamp and Mullen, following their successful rookie campaigns, were both named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team by the league's coaches. DeCamp registered a 10-13 overall record, including a 3-1 mark in SoCon action. Mullen went 13-12 and 7-8 in dual meet action, while leading the squad with four pins.
The Radsky brothers both emerged as strong performers in their sophomore seasons, with Alex going 9-9 in dual meet play and 11-15 on his way to the team lead in points. He comes into the SoCon Championships riding a four-match winning streak, including one pin and has outscored his opponents 37-7 during the streak. Vitaly, who was named SoCon Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 10, was victorious at the Davidson Open, going 5-0 and starting a seven-match win streak of his own. He is second on the squad with 15 overall wins, going 15-10 and pinning four opponents.
The 'Cats' other SoCon Wrestler of the Week, senior O'Hair will be competing in the final championships of his career, and is looking to build on his third-place finish at last year's tournament. The top finisher on the team at the 2008 championships, junior Ben Altman brought home a runner-up result at 125, and goes into this season with title aspirations. He leads the team with 16 overall wins, recording 26 points and one pin.
The SoCon was awarded 11 automatic qualifiers to the NCAA Championships. The conference champion at each weight class as well as a second wrestler from the 141-lb. weight class will all qualify automatically for the championships, which will be held in St. Louis, Mo., March 19-21.
