CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Davidson women's tennis team earned their third win of the week and tallied up their third straight win in a row overall by edging past host Chattanooga, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Hixson Racquet Club in Southern Conference action.
The Wildcats evened their record at 8-8, reaching .500 for the first time since they were 4-3 back on Feb. 27. They also ran their SoCon mark to 3-2. Chattanooga fell to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in league play.
The match, originally scheduled for 12 p.m., was moved to Hixson and delayed until 2:30 p.m. due to the threat of inclement weather in the area, but that did not keep the Wildcats from scoring their third straight win.
Davidson and Chattanooga battled it out in the doubles play to start the match, with both teams splitting the No.1 and 2 spots. Then the duo of Ali Gores (Charlotte, N.C.) and Molly McDevitt (Albuquerque, N.M.) finished off the point for the 'Cats by earning a very well-played 9-7 decision over Annie Green and Shaina Singh of Chattanooga.
Leading 1-0, No. 1 Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) and No. 2 Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored Davidson's second and third points with straight set wins. The duo earned their third straight wins each in singles play by taking 6-4, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-1 decisions over Singh and J. van der Veek at their respective positions.
Berry continued her excellent junior campaign with her team-leading 11th singles victory of the year and also remained undefeated in league play at 5-0. Fanney is right behind Berry with a 4-1 mark in league matches.
After Chattanooga sandwiched a win inbetween Fanney's and Berry's, Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.) sealed the match for Davidson with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Brianna Wishing at No. 6 to push her winning streak to three straight. The sophomore evened her record at the No. 6 position to 6-6, while her overall singles mark improved to 7-8.
Green and Charlotte Bossy netted wins for Chattanooga at No. 5 and 4, for the final score of 4-3.
The Wildcats cap off their five-match week with a trip to Samford for another Southern Conference match on Sunday, Mar. 29th.
