BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Davidson women's tennis team finished off a five-match week with its second straight 4-3 win as the Wildcats scored a Southern Conference road victory at Samford on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats capped off the week with a 4-1 record, earning three of the wins against SoCon opponents. They pushed their current win streak to four in a row as the 'Cats overall mark sits at 9-8 and their league mark at 4-2. Samford fell to 4-8 overall and 1-3 vs. SoCon foes.
Davidson found itself down 1-0 after dropping two of the three doubles matches to start the afternoon. The Bulldogs, limited to only five players due to injuries, took wins at No. 1 and 2 by scores of 8-4 and 8-2.
The 'Cats regrouped, and were able to take four of the six singles spots to comeback and earn the 4-3 decision. Sophomore Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.) started the rally by not even stepping on the court as the Bulldogs had to default the No. 6 singles spot due to an injury to one of its players.
The tandem of Ali Gores (Charlotte, N.C.) and Molly McDevitt (Albuquerque, N.M.), who teamed up to earn the default win at the No. 3 doubles position, captured straight set wins at No. 4 and 5. Gores, who ran her dual singles mark to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in league matches, tallied a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jessica Diamond.
McDevitt continued to shine in her first season with Davidson, earning her seventh singles win by taking home a 6-4, 6-2 win over Beth Erwin. The freshman is 3-1 in SoCon singles matches and has earned five of her seven singles wins at the No. 5 position.
Rounding out the Wildcats' winning afternoon was junior Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.), who needed an extra set to seal her victory. Andrie Meiring of Samford took the first set, 6-4, before Berry came back and pushed the second set to an extra game on her way to a 7-5 triumph. From there, Berry cruised her way to a 6-1 win in the third set to keep her hot streak rolling.
With the win, the junior recorded her team-best 12th singles win of the season, pushed her winning streak to four straight and remained perfect in league matches at 6-0.
The Wildcats take a few days off from their busy week and gear up for a five-match home stretch to finish out the regular season. They first play host to UNC Greensboro, Apr. 1 at 3 p.m.
