DAVIDSON, N.C. — To conclude his impressive rookie season, freshman Ben Lane competed at the NCAA Zone B Championships at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn. over the weekend, going head-to-head with some of the best divers in the country.
He failed to advance to the NCAA Championships, as only the top 11 divers qualified, including divers from Alabama, Miami, Auburn, Florida State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Louisiana State and North Carolina.
“This was a huge step for Ben,” Davidson Head Diving Coach Aaron Hintz said. “He started out a little rough on the 1-meter Friday; this was the first time he has encountered divers of this caliber in a championship format. But by Saturday I think he settled in and really showed what he could do.”
Lane finished with a score of 207.70 and in last place after Friday's competition on the 1-meter, but jumped nearly 20 spots the following day behind a solid performance in Saturday's competition. He finished in 26th place with a score of 276.10 on the 3-meter.
“On 1-meter, the first day, Ben looked a little tight,” Hintz said. “Not that he was performing poorly, he was just wasn't finishing the dives as well as he does normally. Then when he balked on his reverse 2 1/2 tuck, it really ended any hopes of representing himself well.”
“The second day he was a completely different diver, or rather, he was back to where he was during the season,” Hintz said. “He was composed and put together a great list of dives. After the fifth dive (of six), Ben was in contention to final (top 18), but he was just slightly off on his sixth dive. The divers were all very close; five points one way or the other could have raised him to 20th place or dropped him to 30th.”
Lane's competition at the Zones caps off an impressive rookie season, in which he was named Men's Diver of the Year at the 2009 CCSA Championships, where he won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. He also set a school record on the 3-meter diving event and was named CCSA Diver of the Week five times.
“This was a great conclusion to Ben's freshman season, and a huge leap forward for Davidson swimming and diving,” Hintz said. “Ben placed ahead of many divers from some of the top programs in the country. To be included with schools like Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida makes a profound statement about the direction of the Davidson College Swimming and Diving program."
