CHARLESTON, S.C. – Seeking its first Southern Conference win, the Davidson women's tennis team was swept in doubles play that proved to be the winning point as they dropped a 4-3 decision at College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in league play. Davidson fell to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in SoCon action. The 'Cats had split their two matches against the Cougars last year, including earning a 4-2 win over CofC in the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament.
The match started off with CofC earning the doubles point by taking all three positions.
After Kinsey Casey gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead with a singles win at No. 5, Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored the Wildcats' first point of the match with her third straight singles win, a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Holly Dowse at No. 2, to close within one at 2-1.
It would be as close as Davidson got as College of Charleston sealed the win by capturing wins at No. 6 and 4 in the next two matches for a 4-1 lead and eventually the win.
Davidson's last two points came from No. 1 player Michele Fanney (Virgina Beach, Va.) and No. 3 Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany), who each took super tiebreakers in their third sets over their two Cougar opponents.
The Wildcats wrap up their five-match road swing with a 2 p.m. SoCon-matchup at Western Carolina, Mar. 21.
