STATESBORO, Ga. – Playing their first match since Mar. 2, the Davidson women's tennis team fell short in its Southern Conference-opener at Georgia Southern, dropping a 5-2 decision on Saturday morning at the Hanner Tennis Complex.
Davidson dropped to 4-6 on the season and 0-1 in league play, the first time it has lost its SoCon-opener since a 4-3 defeat to Chattanooga, Mar. 12, 2003. The Wildcats, in a bit of a skid lately, have drop five of its last six matches, including three straight. They also saw their eight-match winning streak halted against the Eagles after their 5-2 setback today.
GSU?picked up its fourth straight win to improve to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
The two schools were rained out last year and nearly were again this year. The match was pushed up from its original start time of 2 p.m. to 11 a.m. to avoid the afternoon rain showers.
Singles were played first and that's where Georgia Southern captured the match, taking five of the six matches for a 5-1 lead.
Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored the lone Wildcat singles win with a straight set 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 2 over Ali Beavers. Berry improved to 6-4 on the season in singles action, a team-best.
Though the match was decided, Davidson finished the morning on a strong note by earning wins in two of the three doubles matches for its second point.
Ali Gores (Charlotte, N.C.) and Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.) picked up an 8-3 victory at No. 3, while Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Romina Clemente (Canton, Ohio) scored their second win of the year together with an 8-6 triumph at the No. 2 doubles spot.
The Wildcats next head up to College of Charleston for a match against the Cougars on Sunday at 12 p.m.
