BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Davidson men's tennis team fell one point short in seeking to open Southern Conference play for the second straight year with a win in their league opener, falling 4-3 on the road at Samford on Sunday afternoon.

Davidson, playing Samford for the first time in program history, fell to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in league play. Samford improved to 2-7 overall and 1-0 in SoCon action.

The Wildcats fell behind early after dropping matches at the No. 2 and 3 doubles spots to start. The duo of Walker Lyons and Eric Noble scored the lone doubles win by earning their first win as a team, taking an 8-5 decision over Brian Dushock and Kelwin DeWet.

Lyons and Noble then made it a perfect day against the same Bulldog opponents by scoring wins at the No. 1 and 2 singles spots. Lyons picked up a straight set 6-4, 7-5 win over Dushock, while Noble pushed his win streak to three in a row with a well-played 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, three set winner over DeWet.

Samford came back and took wins at No. 5 and 6 to bring it down to the No. 3 singles position. Senior Scott Myers and the Bulldogs' Carson Kadi battled it out, each taking a set apiece, Myers dropped his first set, 6-3, but charged back to get a 6-4 win. Kadi then closed out the match with a 6-2 win.

Scoring the Wildcats final point of the match was freshman Calum Gee, who also played a three-setter. The freshman, playing his fourth three-set match in a row, halted his two-match losing streak with a solid 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Carl Abalos at the No. 4 position. He improved to 4-5 in his first year, tying Myers for the team-leading in singles wins.

The Wildcats will seek to pick up their first league win when they head up to Chattanooga, Tenn. for a 2:30 match against the Mocs on Monday. Last year saw Davidson score a 5-2 win over Chattanooga at home.
