DAVIDSON, N.C. — In the midst of playing eight of its first nine games at home, the Davidson women's lacrosse team scored its second home win of the year thanks to four Wildcats who had multi-goal games in a 13-10 win over visiting St. Mary's College (Calif.) on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
Behind a team-best four goals, senior Becky Horton (Walnut Creek, Calif.) helped the Wildcats open up a 10-5 lead with all four of her goals coming at the conclusion of the first half and the start of the second half in leading Davidson to the win.
Horton, who netted three goals last Saturday against Bucknell, pushed her season total to eight goals. The senior also played well on the defensive end, forcing three turnovers and picking up three groundballs, both team highs.
After the Gaels rattled off three straight goals to bring themselves within one at 6-5 and 12:15 left in the first half, Horton closed out the half with a free-position goal at the 10:56 mark for a 7-5 Wildcat lead at halftime.
Her scoring did not let up there as she earned another free-position shot at the 28:56 mark to start the second period and capitalized on her opportunity. Then a little over four minutes later, the senior duo of Horton and Heather Frohman (Baltimore, Md.) connected at the 24:30 mark for a 9-5 Davidson lead.
Horton capped off her four-goal spurt with an unassisted score at the 21:08 mark for a 10-5 Wildcat lead, and Davidson held off a late charge by St. Mary's for the three-goal win.
The Gaels' Juliet Munroe scored twice in the last minute to bring the score to 13-9, and Abbie Coleman finished off the scoring with a free-position goal, but time ran out for the Gaels to get any closer.
Recording her second collegiate multi-goal game was Anna Smith (Newburyport, Mass.), who picked up goal numbers three, four and five on the year, while Haley Cook (Darien, Conn.) followed Smith with two goals of her own.
Rounding out the quartet of multi-goal scorers for the Wildcats was freshman Jenna Mugele (Baltimore, Md.) with the first two scores of her collegiate career.
Callie Seymour (Denver, Colo.) added a goal and an assist in the winning effort, while Jen Crawford (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) pushed her team-leading goal total to 10 on the season with a score in the 15th minute of the first half.
St. Mary's was led by Munroe's three scores, while Amy Daniels tallied two goals. Five other Gaels picked up single goals on the afternoon. P.J. Hainley finished with three points, getting a goal and two assists.
Between the pipes, Michelle Pav (Golden, Colo.) registered a new personal-best 15 saves for Davidson, nine of them in the first half. Hilary Gardner was credited with 10 saves for St. Mary's.
Davidson held a slim 31-29 advantage in shots, picked up 11 groundballs and forced 14 turnovers. St. Mary's did have a 17-7 advantage in draw controls, but were just 2-of-8 on its free-position shots.
Davidson wraps up the weekend with a 12 p.m. contest on Sunday, Mar. 1, with a game against Central Connecticut State.
