DAVIDSON, N.C. – Returning home after playing two tough ranked opponents on the road in their last two matches, the Wildcat women's tennis team got back to their winning ways with a 5-2 win over the East Carolina Pirates on Friday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center.
Davidson snapped its two-match skid to improve to 4-3 on the season. It was the Wildcats' sixth straight win over the Pirates in the all-time series, and 12th overall.
After the Wildcats scored wins at No.1 and 2 doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the match, they captured wins at the No. 1, 2, 5 and 6 singles positions to bring home the 5-2 win.
Halting their singles losing streaks on the afternoon was Michele Fanney, Virginia Berry, Molly McDevitt and Samantha Galainena. Three of them took home straight set wins, while Fanney won after Jessica Cook was forced to retire in the second set with Fanney up two games to zero after taking the first set, 6-3.
McDevitt's win at the No. 5 singles spot was her first of the season as she captured a 6-4, 6-3 win over Bocio Cobanillas.
Both Fanney and Berry evened their singles records to 3-3, while Galainena ran her record at the No. 6 singles spot to 2-3 after she took home a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tamara Sachs.
