Men's and Women's Swimmers Remain in Second Place at the End of Day Two at CCSAs

ATHENS, Ga. -- The Wildcats set six school records and turned in five first-place finishes in the final session of the second day of competition at the 2009 CCSA Championships, including a title in the men's 800 freestyle relay, as freshman Curtis Chaney, sophomore Patrick Whitman, junior Brad Carman and senior Merritt Peele concluded the evening by winning the 800 freestyle relay with a school-record time of 6:43.92.
Sophomore Emily Castle (100 fly), freshman Curtis Chaney (200 free), Scott Frantz (100 back) and Ben Lane (1-meter) also won individual events on the second day of competition.
At the end of day two, the Florida Gulf Coast women continue to lead in the championship with a score of 568 and Davidson is in second with 414 points. Georgia Southern is locked in third with 320 points at the conclusion of day two at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia.
For the men, College of Charleston continues to sit in first with 609 points, Davidson is second with 547 points and Gardner-Webb is third with 440 points.
The men's team of Scott Frantz, Patrick Whitman, Miller Williams and Bryan Droll finished second with a school-record time of 1:31.85 in the 200 medley relay to kick off the competition in the evening session. In the women's competition, Lindsey Martin, Caroline Curtiss, Emily Castle and Courtney Sanders finished fourth with a school-record time of 1:45.32.
Freshman David Kerman finished with a runner-up time of 4:03.43 in the 400 IM. Freshman Brian Seo (5th, 4:08.92) and sophomore Ben Lucas (6th, 4:10.38) also competed in the championship final, while freshman Colin Nelson (12th, 4:18.88) competed in the consolation final.
Sophomore Anna Stringfield finished third in the 400 IM with a school-record time of 4:25.88, and freshman Lauren Kamperman was right behind in fourth-place with a time of 4:26.51. Senior Alanna Ream was sixth with a time of 4:31.59, and sophomore Casey Gemunder was 16th in the consolation final with a time of 4:47.47.
Junior Miller Williams finished second in the 100 fly with a school-record time of 49.65, followed by freshman Joe Burquist (5th, 50.72) and junior Brad Carman (7th, 51.05).
Castle won the event on the women's side with a school-record time of 54.62, and Sanders was third with a time of 55.60, also under Castle's old standard. In the consolation final, senior Jessica Totten finished 13th (58.73) and senior Madeline Parra, 15th (59.12).
Chaney finished first in the 200 free with a school-record time of 1:37.72, followed immediately by senior Merritt Peele (1:39.30). Sophomore Bryan Droll (10th, 1:44.10) competed in the consolation final. Martin finished third in the event on the women's side with a school-record time of 1:50.15, and junior Caitlin Sheetz (9th, 1:53.24) and freshman Casey Van Tassell (10th, 1:53.44) were in the consolation heat.
In the 100 breast, sophomore Patrick Whitman finished fifth with a time of 59.24, and Curtiss was fifth with a time of 1:06.95 for the women. Sophomore Hailey Szymczak finished 13th (1:09.19) in the consolation final.
Frantz won the 100 back with a time of 50.28, and freshman Geoff Peitz was second with a time of 50.51. Sophomore Tennant Brastow placed sixth with a time of 52.51, and freshman Joe Burquist finished ninth in the consolation with a time of 52.77. For the women, senior Sarah Bertram finished 12th in the consolation (1:00.24).
Freshman Ben Lane won his second individual title, finishing first on the 1-meter dive with a score of 285.10.
