Wildcats to Defend Title as CCSA Championships Begin Tomorrow

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson Wildcat women's swimming and diving team will look to defend its title, while the men seek to better their runner-up finish from a season ago, as the 2009 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships get underway tomorrow in Athens, Ga.
The competition kicks off Thursday morning with prelims at 10 a.m. in the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 400 medley relay. There will also be diving competitions on the 1-meter for women and the 3-meter for the men. Finals for these events will be held at 6 p.m. in the evening session.
Day two of competition begins with prelims at 10 a.m. in the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 800 free relay. The men's 1-meter diving will hold prelims as well. Finals will begin for these events at 6 p.m.
The final day of competition, with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m., will include the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400 free relay and the 1650 free. The women's 3-meter diving will have prelims and finish in the evening session.
The women's team will be paced by sophomore Lindsey Martin, who has the best time in the league in the 50 free (22.99) and 100 free (50.08) and the second-best time in the 200 free (1:50.59).
Classmates Emily Castle, who has a second-best time in the 100 fly (56.57) and Anna Stringfield, who has the third-best time in the 400 IM (4:30.22), are also crucial to the women's team's success. In the distance events, senior Alanna Ream and Jessica Delgehausen should factor into conference scoring.
The men's team will be led by seniors Merritt Peele and Scott Frantz. Peele enters competition with the conference's best time in the 1650 free of 16:18.34, and Frantz paces the league in the 100 back (51.36).
Freshman Geoff Peitz is poised for a big debut, with conference-leading times in the 200 fly (1:52.86) and the 200 back (1:52.94), and classmate Ben Lane has the best scores in the CCSA on both the 1-meter (279.08) and the 3-meter (342.75).
The defending champions, the Wildcat women will face their greatest challenge from Florida Gulf Coast University, who holds conference-leading times in 12 events. On the men's side, the greatest competition should once again come from the defending-champion College of Charleston Cougars, as well as the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs.
