DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The 2009 Davidson baseball season will kick off with a nine-game homestand, including four games this weekend against Ohio, Lafayette and Army at Wilson Field.
The 'Cats kick off the season with a 4 p.m. Friday game against the Ohio Bobcats, before a Saturday double-header against Lafayette (3 p.m.) and Army (6 p.m.). They finish the weekend with a 1 p.m. start against Lafayette Sunday.
The Wildcats, who finished the 2008 season with an overall record of 12-38 and a 4-23 Southern Conference record, return a wealth of experience in the field, losing just one starting position player, and have a pitching staff full of young arms eager to contribute.
With senior shortstop and closer Matt Webb, who missed the majority of last season, returning to the field healthy and alongside classmate and second baseman Zach Kayne, the Wildcats figure to be solid defensively. On the mound, the 'Cats add a plethora of young arms to a staff anchored by Thomas Middour and Chris Kennedy.
Ohio
The Bobcats went 29-30 in 2008, 14-13 in Mid-American Conference play. They reached the semifinals of the MAC Tournament and return 16 letterwinners, including seven position players, from squad that set the school's single-season records for hits (665), at-bats (2,161), putouts (1,585), assists (707) and innings pitched (528.1). They are led by Second-Team All-MAC selection Brandon Besi, who led the team in batting (.369) and slugging (.631), and junior Preseason All-American Marc Krauss, a two-time All-MAC selection.
Lafayette
Lafayette finished the 2008 season with a 25-23 overall record and went 8-2 in the Patriot League, missing out on the four-team conference tournament field. The Leopards return seven position players, including senior tri-captain Chris Luick, who led the team with a .329 batting average last year and is a former All-Patriot League selection, and Daniel Bierce, a 2008 All-Patriot League Second-Team selection who started all 48 games and hit for a .324 average a season ago.
Army
Army was selected as the preseason favorite in the Patriot League, for the fourth time in five seasons. Army, who finished with an even 25-25 overall record and 13-7 in the league, captured consecutive conference championships in 2004 and 2005 and qualified for the league's postseason tournament four of the last five years. The Black Knights claimed their third regular season Patriot League championship in five years last spring, earning the No. 1 seed in the tournament with an 11-7 record, and return 14 letterwinners from that squad. In addition to returning five positional starters from last year's team, Army also welcomes back nine of its top 11 pitchers from 2008.
