DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior Alex Radsky earned his first tournament title, winning at 133 pounds to lead the Davidson wrestling team in the Davidson Open on Saturday at Baker Sports Complex. Junior Charlie Wolff (heavyweight) and senior Ben Altman (125) also placed in their respective classes.
A total of 108 wrestlers competed in the tournament.
Radsky won all three of his matches, earning his first-round victory with a pin in 2:30. In the quarterfinals, Radsky earned a 6-1 decision over Jared Jones of No. 24 Virginia Tech and then battled for a 3-1 decision over Clint Spencer (Newberry-Unattached) in the championship match.
“It was a great day for Alex, and this win was something he really needed for his confidence coming off of an injury,” said head coach Bob Patnesky. “This should kick-start him as we move ahead in the season.”
Wolff ultimately placed second after getting pinned in the championship round by Dustin Porter, who was competing unattached from Gardner-Webb. Wolff went 3-1 on the day with one pin. He advanced out of the first round with a 3-1 decision, and was then able to outlast Josh Gibson (Newberry-unattached) in the quarterfinals. Wolff earned the victory with four seconds of riding time after the contest went the distance in double overtime. In the semifinal round, Wolff battled Matt Wade, also unattached from Newberry, and eventually pinned him after 6:49.
“Charlie has the potential to be a very, very good wrestler,” said Patnesky. “He proved today that he can compete at a high level.”
Altman earned a major decision in his first match, but suffered a technical fall to eventual second-place finisher Michael Slaughter of Gardner-Webb. Altman rallied though, earning a major decision over Brett Boston (Appalachian State-unattached) and a 12-8 decision over Chris Jones (SMU) to place third.
Joining Radsky in the 133-pound bracket was freshman Scott Ray, who finished fourth after going 2-2 for the day. Ray lost a 4-2 decision to eventual finalist Spencer, but advanced in the consolation bracket with a pair of technical falls before dropping a 9-2 decision to Jones in the third-place match.
Others competing for Davidson included freshman Matt Zarth (1-2) at 125 pounds, junior Vitaly Radsky (1-2) and senior Ben Thompson (0-2) at 141, senior Carl Sandercock (0-2) at 149, junior Joe McGinley (1-2) and freshman Brent Mowry (2-2) at 157, sophomore Jorge Estrada (2-2, 1 pin) at 174, freshman Ike Crews (1-2) at 184 and senior Mark Jeevratnam at 197.
“Overall, it was a great day for our team,” said Patnesky. “Some guys did not do as well as they hoped, but others got some big wins. At this point, it's important that we build confidence, so everyone believes that they can compete at a high level and that they are capable of winning every time they step on the mat.”
The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, Dec. 18 when they host defending Southern Conference champion Chattanooga in their first conference dual of the season.
