DAVIDSON, N.C. — Head coach Annette Watts has announced the signing of her next class for the Davidson women's basketball team as the Wildcats will welcome Laura Murray and Shneeka Center to the class of 2014 next season.
“Laura and Shneeka bring athleticism, solid skill sets and high basketball intelligence to our team,” said Watts, who is in her ninth season. “Both are outstanding young women and great students who will fit well into the Davidson family.”
A 5-9 guard/forward from Harrisburg, Pa., Murray has been a two-time first-team Pennsylvania All-State member during her time at Trinity High School. Twice, Murray has earned Carlisle Sentinal Player of the Year and been team MVP for Trinity. She was a Pennsylvania District Three Champion last year during the 2008-09 campaign, and has been a Pennsylvania District Three All-Tournament team pick three times during her prep career. Murry has also twice been a Harrisburg Patriot News “Big 15” selection.
“Laura works extremely hard and has great tenacity,” said Watts. “She has the versatility of a classic floor leader as she is an excellent passer and decision-maker from the point guard slot. Yet, she can score in a variety of ways from the wing position. Laura has a great personality and is the kind of player that makes everyone around her better.”
A three-time team captain, Murray has also excelled in the classroom as she is a member of both the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society. She has been a student council class secretary for three years and is the group director for the Peer Actively Listening (PAL) Program.
Center comes to Davidson from Smithtown, N.Y., where she attends Smithtown West. A 5-10 shooting guard/forward, Center has been a Smithtown Booster Club MVP twice, while earning All-Long Island Second Team honors two times as well. She has also been a two-time all-state pick during her prep career.
“Shneeka is that tall, quick guard we have been lacking the last couple of years,” said Watts. “She has the ability and size to post up, yet loves to face up and score. She also has a nose for rebounding, and that skill, along with her versatility and athleticism will all be great assets for our team next season.”
The 2008-09 season saw Center lead the county in scoring, dropping in 28.6 points per game, and has already closed the 1,000-point plateau, reaching that mark as a sophomore. She has been a three-time all-county pick and earned all-league honors four times already.
Davidson, fresh off its fourth win in the last five games after a 64-55 victory against Newberry College on Tuesday, opens up the new year with a Southern Conference tilt against UNC Greensboro at John M. Belk Arena on Saturday, Jan. 2. Gametime is set for 2 p.m.
