KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Davidson men's soccer senior Charlie Reiter received his second All-America honor for excellence both on the field and in the classroom as he was elected to the 2009 NSCAA/adidas Men's College Scholar All-America University Division First Team by the voting members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Reiter, the 2009 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Year and a first-team NSCAA All-South Region selection, boasts a 3.48 grade point average and majors in political science. In November, he received his first All-America honor as he was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America First Team. Reiter is a two-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll selection, a member of the Davidson Scholars program, and was a member of Team USA at the 2009 Maccabiah Games in Israel last summer.
Reiter is the second NSCAA Scholar All-America first-team selection and the fourth overall from Davidson since the award was introduced in 1998. Chris Norbet drew first-team honors in 2001, while David People and Soren Johnson were both named to the third team in 2002.
“This award is another wonderful feather in Charlie's cap,” said head coach Matt Spear. “It means a lot to me too, because it's awarded through the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Charlie stepped forward this season with lots of important goals and was a major factor in our successful campaign.”
Hailing from Westport, Conn., Reiter scored 12 goals and eight assists for 32 points after starting all 18 matches. He ranked among the national leaders on offense, finishing the season ranked sixth in points per game (1.78), eighth in goals per game (0.67) and 29th in assists per game (0.44). Reiter played in every single match the past four years, starting 48 of 77 matches.
To be nominated for consideration, student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout their career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; be nominated by an institution that is a current NSCAA College Services member; be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution and either be in their second year at the current school if a transfer student.
Five schools across both the University and College Divisions each had two players honored. Three of those teams, Drake and Stanford in the University Division and Carnegie Mellon in the College Division, extended their seasons deep into the NCAA Tournament.
Seven players earned a repeat appearance on the squad, led by first-team selections J.T. Noone (Temple/Harrisburg, Pa.) and Michael Thomas (Notre Dame/Olathe, Kan.) in the University Division. Nicklaus Schuermann of Wofford gave the SoCon two representatives on the first team.
The NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America selections will be recognized at the annual All-America Luncheon, held in Philadelphia, Pa., on Jan. 16 as part of the 2010 NSCAA Convention.
