Reiter, Caskey Named To Men's Soccer All-South Region Team

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The postseason accolades continued for Davidson men's soccer on Tuesday, as it was announced senior Charlie Reiter was one of three forwards elected to the 2009 NSCAA Men's Division I Soccer All-South Region First Team and junior midfielder Alex Caskey was elected to the second team.
Reiter and Caskey are the first Davidson all-region honorees since All-American John Latting represented that 'Cats on the team for three consecutive seasons (2003-2005). The Wildcats had not had multiple players named to the All-South team in the same season since Eric Ozimek and Chris Norbet were both elected to the second team following in 2001. Davidson has now had 21 different players elected to the team since 1957.
“The South Region is arguably the strongest collection of players and teams in the nation with national powers like Wake Forest, North Carolina, and Duke, so it's awesome for Charlie and Alex to rise to the top in such a talented region,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “It is a testament to their important contributions to our successful season.”
The teams were voted upon by members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The South region is comprised of 28 teams representing the Southern Conference, Atlantic Sun Conference, five members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, three from Conference USA and two independents. Reiter, the 2009 Southern Conference Player of the Year, was one of three Southern Conference players on the first team. The ACC claimed the other eight spots.
Hailing from Westport, Conn., Reiter scored 12 goals and eight assists for 32 points after starting all 18 matches, Reiter was among the national leaders on offense, finishing the season ranked sixth in points per game (1.78), eighth in goals per game (0.67) and 29th in assists per game (0.44). His scoring total was the best single-season mark for a Davidson player since Norbet scored 42 points (19g, 4a) in 2001. Reiter played in every single match the past four years, starting 48 of 77 matches. Reiter was also successful in the classroom, as he was named to the 2009 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America First Team.
A native of Dunwoody, Ga., Caskey continued to anchor the Davidson midfield in 2009 and was named to the All-SoCon First Team for the second consecutive season. He served as a team tri-captain and finished the season with seven goals and two assists for 16 points. He only saw rest in two matches, playing all but 20 minutes of the season.
Caskey led the Wildcats with six goals in eight contests in September to earn SoCon Player of the Month honors. His top performance came against then-No. 25 South Carolina when he scored two goals (including the game-winner) and an assist to earn a place on the Soccer America Men's Team of the Week.
