DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson's Charlie Reiter was named to the 2009 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Team for men's soccer (District 3) on Friday. The senior forward will now be placed on the national ballot for the Academic All-America team.
Reiter (Westport, Conn.) boasts a 3.48 grade point average majoring in political science, while ranking among the top scorers in the country this season with nine goals and seven assists for 25 points. The total leads the Southern Conference.
Earlier this season, Reiter was named the Southern Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week for all games played September 29-October 5. He tallied five points (2 goals, 1 assist) as he helped the Wildcats pick up conference wins over College of Charleston (3-2 OT) and Georgia Southern (3-0). Reiter also scored in Davidson's 4-1 win over then-No. 6 Duke (Oct. 6).
Three Academic All-District teams are chosen in each district, with those on the All-District first teams placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. Nominations and voting for the All-America programs are conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Reiter is the first member of Davidson's men's soccer team to receive Academic All-District recognition since Mac Wilkie in 2006. Wilkie was then named to the Academic All-America Second Team.
A total of four Davidson men's soccer players have been named Academic All-Americans. Tracy Hankins (1989), Chris Norbet (2001) and Soren Johnson (2002) were Davidson's first three honorees.
The Wildcats will next face UNC Greensboro on the road in a crucial Southern Conference match on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
