DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's soccer team will honor their seven seniors prior to Saturday night's match against current Southern Conference standings-leader Wofford. Kickoff for the men's soccer home finale is set for 7 p.m. in Alumni Stadium.
The contest will pit the SoCon's top-scoring team in Davidson (30 goals in 14 games) against the SoCon's toughest defense in Wofford (9 goals allowed in 11 games).
With just four regular season contests remaining, two against conference opponents, the 'Cats will play their final regular season home match Saturday and finish with three on the road. With a 3-2-0 record in the conference, the 'Cats presently sit third with nine points. Wofford (3-0-1) leads with 10 points and is followed by Elon (3-1-0) with 9 points (Elon defeated Davidson and thus holds the first tiebreaker).
The 'Cats need to earn a win or draw against Wofford to keep their regular season title hopes alive, and accordingly, the opportunity to host the SoCon tournament. The conference's top-four teams will qualify. The tournament picture will be clarified significantly after the conclusion of Saturday's matches, as all eight conference teams will compete against each other (Wofford at Davidson, Appalachian State at College of Charleston, Georgia Southern at UNC Greensboro, Elon at Furman).
“We very much look forward to battling Wofford and commend them for the season they have enjoyed thus far,” said head coach Matt Spear. “Both teams are having very good seasons, so the soccer should be great. Our guys have played their best soccer this season against good teams. I know we have even another level of soccer within us. Saturday will be a special night.”
Before the match gets underway, the senior class composed of D Liam Bracken, GK Robby Goldsberry, MF/D Christian Hambleton, D Tim Roark, F Charlie Reiter, F Clinton Smith and F Machel Turner will be recognized for their accomplishments at Davidson College.
“Our seven seniors are all great young men, and they have contributed enormously to Davidson soccer,” said Spear. “They have inspired the coaches and the team. I have no doubt that the underclassmen have cherished their leadership and mentoring.”
Reiter has been the standout of the Class of 2010 this season with a conference-leading 25 points (9 goals, 7 assists). Goldsberry and Roark have provided valuable leadership as team tri-captains. After missing the past two seasons due to injury, Hambleton battled back this season, earning starts in the last two games. Turner has seen significant minutes, while Bracken and Smith have also been valuable contributors.
“They are also tremendous students and active on the campus – they will be winners beyond Davidson soccer,” said Spear.
For those who can't make it to the field, the match will be broadcast on live video with live audio commentary, along with live stats throughout the contest.
Scouting the Wildcats: At 10-4-0, 3-2-0 the 'Cats continue to rank among the best in the nation, receiving significant votes for the Top 25 national polls. Davidson is ranked No. 29 in the College Soccer News Top 30 poll.
Senior F Charlie Reiter remains as the SoCon scoring leader with 25 points (9 goals, 7 assists), last scoring in Davidson's 2-1 win over Furman. He is followed by junior F Yannick Pilgrim at 20 points (7g, 6a). Pilgrim assisted on both of the goals in the Furman win. Junior MF Alex Caskey is tied for fourth in the conference at 14 points (6g, 2a). The trio tops the conference goal-scoring list.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chip Sanders has lowered his goals against average to 1.20, and has made 44 saves through 14 games, starting each.
Davidson enters the match coming off a tough 1-0 loss on the road to ACC power Virginia Tech. The 'Cats generated the most quality chances, but were unable to convert in the final minutes.
Scouting the Terriers: Wofford stands at 7-1-3, 3-0-1 and is coming off a 4-1 win over Georgia Southern. Their only loss this season was on the road to ACC power NC State, 0-2 on Oct. 6. They earned SoCon wins over ASU (1-0), Elon (2-0) and Georgia Southern, while tying with UNCG, 2-2. CofC and Furman remain on their conference schedule. Wofford's goals against average of 0.76 is tops in the conference, as Elon (0.82) and Davidson (1.19) both follow.
Goalkeeper Thomas Hunter is a large part of the Terriers' defense, leading the SoCon with a .837 save percentage and a 0.68 goals against average. Kentrel Owens leads the team in scoring with eight points on four goals.
Wofford, which joined Division I in 1995 and the SoCon in 1997, has set a new school mark for SoCon wins in a season with three. In addition, the seven overall wins are tied for the most in Wofford's NCAA Division I era.
The Series: Davidson leads the all-time series 17-1-0. Wofford's lone win came in 1980. The 'Cats have one the last 15 matchups, including all since Wofford joined the SoCon. Davidson won, 1-0 last season.
Up Next: The Wildcats will hit the road to face No. 3 Wake Forest on Tuesday. Then they will face UNCG in their final regular season conference game on Saturday. The regular season will conclude for the 'Cats on Nov. 3 at Campbell.
