Martin and Onken Shine as 'Cats Host East Carolina

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Freshman Drew Onken won three individual titles and junior Lindsey Martin won a pair for the Davidson Wildcat swimming and diving teams, but the East Carolina Pirates prevailed in a dual meet Saturday afternoon at Cannon Natatorium.

For a second straight weekend, Martin won both the 50 and the 100 free. She finished first in the 50 free with a time of 23.86 and won the 100 free in a time of 52.36. The Wildcat women finished 116-183 to East Carolina.

Onken led the Wildcat men with three individual titles. He finished first in the 100 breast with a time of 59.70, the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.42 and the 400 IM with a time of 4:04.13. East Carolina finished 167-120 to the Wildcat men.

The other individual winner for the Wildcat women, junior Emily Castle finished first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.25.

The Wildcat women also finished first in both relays. Freshman Kelsi Hobbs, senior Caroline Curtiss, Castle and Martin won the 4x100 medley relay in a time of 3:56.01.

Castle also swam leadoff on the Wildcats' winning 4x50 freestyle relay, along with freshman Jean DeOrnellas, sophomore Casey Van Tassell and Martin, finishing in 1:38.16.

On the men's side, sophomore Curtis Chaney and sophomore Geoffrey Peitz each won a pair of individual titles.

Chaney won the 100 free with a time of 47.98 and the 200 free with a time of 1:43.96. Peitz won both the 100 and the 200 backstrokes. He finished first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.21 and out touched the field in the 200 with a time of 1:55.80.

The Wildcat men also finished first in the 4x100 medley relay, as Peitz and Onken combined with senior Miller Williams and junior Bryan Droll for a first-place time of 3:31.06.

The Wildcats will return to action next weekend, traveling to Emory for a noon meet on Oct. 24.
