CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Freshman Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) is closing out his first collegiate fall season in impressive fashion, reaching the round of 16 in singles, while he also earned a doubles win to represent six Davidson men's tennis players at the ITA Carolinas Regional held on the campus of North Carolina.
On his way to the round of 16, Schafer took out two seeded players, one from College of Charleston and the other from USC Upstate. The freshman started the regionals off with a solid 6-4, 6-2 win over 17th seeded Lukas Koncilia of Charleston. He followed that win up with a victory over a player from UNC Ashville in the round of 64 to face off then against another seeded player in the round of 32.
Schafer battled hard and prevailed in a three-setter over 13th-seeded Edgar Rodriguez of USC Upstate, needing a tiebreaker to reach the round of 16. He opened the match with a strong 6-3 win, but fell in the second set, 1-6, as Rodriguez forced the third set. The set was a back-and-forth battle that was won by Schafer in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4).
His weekend would come to an end in the round of 16 when he lost to the No. 1 seeded Clay Donato, 6-4, 6-1.
The freshman's strong play also continued in doubles action as he teamed with sophomore Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) to reach the round of 32, before seeing their run come to an end. The duo opened doubles play with an 8-5 victory over a team from Presbyterian. They then faced a team from UNC, which was seeded third, and fell by the score of 8-3.
Also having a nice showing through the first two days of the regionals was freshman Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) and Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) as the pair both opened with wins to reach the round of 64. Mark registered a three-set win by the scores of 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 over Bryan Oakley of East Carolina, but was defeated in his bid to reach the round of 32 when he dropped a three-set match, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, to a player from Coastal Carolina.
Walker was equally impressive, scoring an opening three-set victory (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) over Frederik Prandecki of N.C. State, before he then suffered a 6-2, 6-2 defeat to sixth-seeded Carlos Alvarez from Clemson.
Also taking part in the singles action was Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.), who fell in his first match, 6-3, 6-2 to a player from Gardner-Webb.
Davidson's other doubles team featured Noble, who teamed up with fellow senior Sam Burns (Banner Elk, N.C.) as they were defeated by a pair from UNC, 8-6.
The regionals will wrap up tomorrow, Sunday Oct. 18, with Schafer set to play at 9 p.m.
