Wildcats To Host Davidson College Invitational
10/11/2009 1:40:28 PM | Men's Golf
DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson men's golf team will host the first of two events this season when they welcome a 12-team field to the River Run Country Club for the 2009 Davidson College Invitational, to take place on Monday, Oct. 12 and Tuesday, Oct. 13.
The 'Cats will be joined by 11 talented teams, including four fellow Southern Conference members in Appalachian State, Charleston Southern, Elon and Wofford. Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb and Liberty from the Big South conference will also be participating. After finishing as the tournament co-champions last year, Army and Northern Illinois will both return. Francis Marion and Guilford College will both join this year's field.
The tournament will begin on Monday morning with the competitors completing 36 holes of play on the day, beginning with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start. Davidson will be paired with Army and Gardner-Webb on the first four holes, with Northern Illinois, Francis Marion and Liberty beginning on holes 5-9. Elon, Wofford and Guilford College will start on holes 10-13. Appalachian State, Radford and Charleston Southern will begin at holes 14-18, with those players competing as individuals teeing off on hole 18.
After conclusion of play in the first 36 holes on day one, the final round tee times will be determined by the team standings up to that point. The fourth, fifth, and sixth-place teams will tee off on the first hole beginning at 8:30 a.m., followed by the top three teams, who will begin at 9:15 a.m. On the tenth hole the seventh, eighth, and ninth-place squads will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 10th, 11th and 12th place teams at 9:15 a.m.
The Invitational will take place at the River Run Country Club a 7,208-yard, par-72 championship course located in Davidson. The course was recognized by Golf Reporter as one of the finest tracks in the Southeast, and went through a complete renovation in 2007, including a rebuilding of all of the greens, and a laser-leveling of the tee boxes. It is one of the home courses for the Davidson golf program, giving the 'Cats one of the top facilities in the area.
Individually, a new champion will be crowned as 2008 tournament-winner Michael Saari has since graduated. Saari, who entered the final day of competition in a tie for second place, fired a 35 on the back nine to bring home individual medalist honors by one stroke (two-over par 218) over the runner-up competitor, Army's Matt Krembel.
The Wildcats have competed in two tournaments so far this season. Davidson junior Bobby Urso and freshman John Skeadas each shot a three-round total of 216 to tie for 23rd at the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate in early September. The Wildcats placed 13th as a team, four strokes out of 12th, in the 16-team tournament. The event featured eight teams from the Southern Conference and was won by Georgia Southern.
Skeadas then helped lead Davidson past College of Charleston at the Mason Rudolph Championships hosted at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. He shot a final-round 69 as the Wildcats finished in 10th place as the top Southern Conference team. The Wildcats posted a two-round score of 578 on the par-71, 7,100-yard South course.
The Wildcats were one of only three teams in the 17-team field to improve their score on the final day after rain washed out the second round.
Skeadas shot a two-under-par 69 on Sunday, a five-stroke improvement on his first-round score, to place in a nine-way tie for 30th overall at 143, one-over-par. Junior Christopher Rollins also finished with a 143 (70+73). Urso was one-stroke behind at 144 (72+72).
Davidson sat in a tie with SoCon rival Western Carolina in 12th place and two places behind C of C after the first round on Friday, but improved by two strokes to 288. CofC ultimately finished 11th, two strokes behind with a total of 580 (285+295), while Western Carolina fell to 13th at 594 (290+304).
