DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After leading Davidson to a perfect 4-0 month in Southern Conference games for December, matching the best start in league play, point guard Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) was honored with the SoCon Player of the Month award today as voted on by the sports information directors of women's basketball.
The junior becomes just the second Wildcat to earn a player of the month award after Katie Hamilton was given the honor for the month of February during the 2004-05 season. Thompson earlier this year was honored with her first career player of the week award.
Thompson finished the month by averaging a team-best 15.1 points per game and shot a sizzling 48.1 percent from three-land where she hit 26 of her 34 total field goals (26-54 on three-pointers).
She scored in double figures in six of the seven games for the month, including hitting the 30- and 20-point mark once each. The junior had a record-setting day on Dec. 6 when she tied a single-game school-record by netting 35 points, while setting a new single-game school and SoCon record with nine three-pointers in leading Davidson to a 95-75 road win over Appalachian
State.
Two games later she hit the 20-point mark for the second time in her career with an even 20 points in a win over Western Carolina, Dec. 14. Thompson then recorded her first career double-double on Dec. 19 at Xavier with 10 points and a personal-best 10 assists.
In addition to her stout scoring numbers, Thompson also averaged nearly six assists a contest, dishing out a team-high 40 assists for the month. She had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.0 for December, and currently ranks second in the league in that category. She leads the league in assists per game at 4.3 a game.
For the season, Thompson is pouring in a personal-best 11.3 points per contest and has hit a SoCon-best 35 shots from behind the arc for a team-best average of 40.7 percent. Against league opponents the junior is dropping in a team-high 18.2 points per game, while shooting a blistering 55.8 percent on three-pointers.
Davidson, which sits in first place in the SoCon with a perfect 6-0 mark, looks to continue its school-record start in league play with a 2 p.m. contest against Georgia Southern on Saturday at John M. Belk Arena. The 'Cats have won their last 10 straight meetings vs. the Eagles.
