DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Behind the strength of three straight double-doubles for the week, Davidson's senior Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) garnered her second Southern Conference Player of the Week honor this season for games played from Dec. 23-Jan. 5 as voted on today by the league's women's basketball sports information directors.
Robinson, who was voted the league player of the week back on Dec. 16, earned her fourth career weekly honor and the Wildcats' third as a team this year.
The senior forward led Davidson to a perfect 3-0 week with league wins over Wofford (Dec. 30), Elon (Jan. 3) and UNC Greensboro (Jan. 5) by averaging a double-double, 14.3 points and 13.7 rebounds per game. With the three league wins, Davidson continues its school-record start in SoCon play at a perfect 6-0.
Robinson started the week off by finished out the 2008 calendar year with a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with 12 points in an 83-68 win over Wofford.
She then followed that up against Elon by being one of four Wildcats to reach double digits with 14 points and another game-best 12 rebounds, the third straight game she recorded over 10 rebounds in a contest.
The senior saved her best game of the week for the last one when she carried Davidson to an overtime win at UNC Greensboro by pouring in game highs of 17 points and 17 rebounds for her third double-double of the week, and fourth in a row overall. She recorded a double-double in the second half alone with 15 points and 12 rebounds when she answered nearly every Spartan bucket to help force overtime.
The 17 rebounds set a new personal best, surpassing her previous career high of 15 set earlier in the year. Of her 17 rebounds, 15 of them were on the defensive end, tying a career best.
The three double-doubles give Robinson eight on the season and 25 for her career. She is currently averaging 14.3 points per game to go along with a 10.1 average in rebounds as she aims to become just the second SoCon player this decade to average a double-double for a season.
Davidson hunts for its seventh straight league win, and ninth in a row dating back to last year, when it plays host to Georgia Southern on Saturday at 2 p.m.
