DAVIDSON, N.C. — Having won its first four Southern Conference games, Davidson looks to ring in the new year when it seeks to continue its school-record start in league play by hosting Elon on Saturday evening in women's basketball action at John M. Belk Arena.
The Opening Tip
The 2008-09 team looks to become the first Davidson (5-8, 4-0 SoCon) squad in program history to win its first five league games when it plays host to the Elon Phoenix (1-11, 0-5 SoCon) on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The series is 14 games old with Davidson leading 10-4 and winners of the nine of the past 10 meetings.
Elon halted the Wildcats nine-game series win streak with a upset win in the SoCon quarterfinals last year, 68-49, in the two schools last meeting. Davidson could not overcome a 31.7 percent shooting performance in the game as the Phoenix placed four players in double digits in points.
Scouting the Wildcats
•Davidson (5-8, 4-0 SoCon) returned to conference play after a nine-day Christmas break and continued its winning ways against league foes with an 83-68 win over Wofford on Tuesday.
•The 4-0 start by this year's squad in league play matches the 2006-07 team as the only squads in program history to win their first four Southern Conference games.
•Dating back to last year, the 'Cats have won their last six straight regular-season league games.
•Davidson has hit the 80-point plateau in three of the four SoCon wins so far this year.
•Ashley Lax hit the 20-point mark for the third time in the past four contests with a 24-point effort in the triumph over Wofford. Twice she has gone for a career-best 24 in that four-game stretch.
•Davidson placed four players in all in double digits vs. the Terriers, with Mercedes Robinson (12 pts /12 rebs) and Julia Paquette (season-high 14 pts / 11 rebs) both recording double doubles. It was the second time this year two players have registered at least 10 rebounds in a game.
•Davidson finished the month of December with a 4-3 mark, getting all four wins against league foes. It was the seventh time in head coach Annette Watts' eight years the 'Cats have had a winning December.
•For the month of December, Alex Thompson (15.1 ppg), Lax (14.6) and Robinson (14.3) gave the Wildcats three players who averaged double digits in points for the month.
•Robinson is averaging a double-double against league opponents, 15.5 ppg and 10.5 rpg.
•With their 52 rebounds vs. Wofford on Tuesday, the Wildcats have hit the 50-board mark twice this year.
•Dating back to 2006-07 season, Davidson has won 23 of its past 28 home contests, including this year's 3-1 record. The Wildcats are in the midst of playing four of its next five games at home.
•In their last meeting vs. Elon at John Belk Arena, Davidson took a 68-54 decision behind Robinson's 17 points and Thompson's game-high 18.
Scouting the Phoenix
•Elon (1-11, 0-5 SoCon) has had a rough go of it since a season-opening win over Winston-Salem State, dropping its last 11 contests. Of those 11 setbacks, two of them have come in overtime.
•Off since Dec. 28, the Phoenix last played against Austin Peay. They suffered an 81-53 setback on their home floor.
•Tiffany Davis (15 pts) and Tiara Gause (12) each hit for double digits in points vs. Austin Peay, and are averaging 8.3 and 8.5 points per game, respectively.
•Davis was one of four Elon scorers to go for double figures last time out vs. the Wildcats as she had 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-3 from downtown, and hit five of her six free throw attempts.
•Pacing the Phoenix offense this season has been Urysla Cotton with a 9.8 ppg average. Earlier this year she scored a career-high 25 points at Weber State.
•Cotton is also one of two Phoenix averaging over seven rebounds a game with a 7.7 average. She ranks 7th in the league in rebounds per game and is 3rd in blocks per game at 1.6 (19 overall).
•Amber Wall paces Elon with an even 8.0 rpg average, having led the team five teams in rebounding with all 5 of those games seeing her hit the double-digit mark.
•Wall ranks 4th overall in the SoCon in rebounds per game.
•This will be Elon's 3rd straight league road game.
