DAVIDSON, N.C. – After 16 years in Charleston, S.C., the 2009 Southern Conference Baseball tournament will be played for the first time at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C., from May 20-24.
“We're excited to have this important baseball tournament taking place here in the Upstate at last and are happy for the Wofford and Furman alumni in the region, as well as for Upstate baseball fans in general,” said Craig Brown Drive Co-Owner and President. “The strong support this community and our SoCon schools are sure to give this tournament will speak volumes about the great baseball legacy this region enjoys, and will confirm the wisdom of the Southern Conference leadership's decision to hold the tournament in the Upstate.”
With the addition of Samford this season, the Southern Conference features 11 participating schools in baseball, with the top eight advancing to the tournament. Formed in 1921, the Southern Conference ranks as the fourth oldest major college athletic conference in the United States.
A five-day SoCon Tournament Pass is available for $85 and includes entrance into all 14 games and a daily, full-service food offering. To purchase, call the Fluor Field Box Office at (864) 240.4528 or visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com.
The double-elimination tournament will kick off on Wed., May 20 with the first slated for 9 a.m. and the last at 9 p.m. The championship game will be played at 2 p.m. Sunday, with the winner nabbing an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament and a shot to make it to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
“The Southern Conference is known for having high level of talent in baseball,” Drive General Manager Mike deMaine said. “We're looking forward to seeing these promising scholar-athletes have the chance to play at award-winning Fluor Field, while their school's alumni and fans enjoy the unique amenities and pleasure our downtown and ballpark have to offer.”
