DAVIDSON, N.C. – After splitting a pair of matches in their season-opening tournament this past weekend, the Davidson men's soccer team makes its first road trip of the year when they travel up to the nation's capital to take on Georgetown and Maryland.
On Friday night, the 'Cats will match up against the Georgetown Hoyas, who come into the match with a 2-0 record, having won both of their games at the Cal State Northridge Tournament. They received two votes in the latest NCSAA/adidas National Poll this past week, good for a 36th-place ranking. This will be the second-ever meeting between the two schools, with Davidson holding a 1-0 advantage in the series courtesy of a 2-1 victory over the Hoyas in 1987. Davidson Head Coach Matt Spear expects a good battle to kick off the weekend.
“Georgetown is a great academic school with a proud athletic program, much like Davidson,” he said. “Their team had a great second half of the 2007 season and return ten starters and all of their scoring from last year. And since they play in the Big East Conference, we know they have a very solid team. We will need to be ready to play an aggressive, confident, smart game from the first to 90th minute.”
Davidson will wrap up their weekend against nationally ranked Maryland in College Park, Md. for the first-ever meeting between the Wildcats and Terrapins. Maryland enters the match at 1-1 and ranked ninth in the latest NCSAA/adidas National Poll, falling one spot after winning at No. 19 UCLA and then dropping a 1-0 decision against 11th-ranked California.
The Wildcats opened their 2008 campaign last weekend when they hosted the Davidson adidias Classic at Alumni Stadium. They fell in the opening match to Charlotte on Friday night, then bounced back with a 2-0 decision over Marshall to finish in a tie for second place in the field. Three different players have scored goals for Davidson this season, with four more combining for the four assists recorded so far. Junior goalkeeper Robby Goldsberry recorded his second career shutout in the win over Marshall, the first blank slate for Davidson in over two years.
