DAVIDSON, N.C. - A men's soccer scholarship at Davidson College has been established in the name of the program's all-time winningest coach, and current CEO of the Capital Area Soccer League, Charlie Slagle. Slagle has been honored by former players, parents, and friends with the establishment of an endowed, permanent scholarship for a men's soccer player.
As a goalkeeper, Slagle set—and still holds—the Davidson single-season record for saves, recording 151 stops in 1974. As a coach, Slagle was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year seven times, Regional coach of the year twice, and in 1992, NCAA National Coach of the Year.
It was in that season that Slagle's team complied a school-record 17 victories on their way to the NCAA Final Four, the only time in the program's history they have reached the National Semifinals. He was also given the Bill Jeffrey Award in 1993, an honor bestowed by the ISAA to the person who shows continued dedication and contribution to intercollegiate soccer.
Current Davidson Head Coach Matt Spear echoes the incredible impact Slagle has had on both the Wildcat Soccer family and himself.
“Clearly, I would not be a soccer coach if it were not for the influence of Charlie,” he said. “He has always been on my side, and he continues to be a great friend of the program. I am so very proud that the first endowed men's soccer scholarship is in his name, it is sure to help our program accelerate.”
Slagle retired from Davidson in 2000 with 209 career wins, the most by men's soccer coach at the school. Shortly thereafter, he became CEO of CASL, which is one of the largest and best known youth soccer clubs in the United States. During Slagle's tenure, CASL has hosted numerous youth tournaments, as well as the men's and women's NCAA College Cups and the USYS Southern Regionals. He was inducted into the North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Davidson Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.
Rob Ukrop, one of the initial contributors to the scholarship, and the only soccer player at Davidson to have his jersey retired, said of the effort, “We are excited and proud that we can honor Coach Slagle in this way. Charlie's impact on the game of soccer in America, and in North Carolina specifically, is tremendous. We're truly happy that we can continue to honor his contributions to the sport and to Davidson College in particular. “
