DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's soccer team will look to pick up its second home victory of the season when they take on the High Point Panthers this Saturday night at Alumni Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The match will be the last time the Wildcats will be at home in September, as the team will embark on a four-match road trip to round out the month. This includes matchups against perennial national powers Duke and South Carolina, and two contests in the Charlotte Tournament, where they will face off against UAB?and Winthrop.
This past weekend, Davidson traveled up the East Coast to take on Georgetown University and the University of Maryland. In the first match, the 'Cats fell to the No. 20 Hoyas 3-0, then dropped a 4-1 decision at No. 9 Maryland. Machel Turner scored the goal for Davidson against the Terrapins, and became the first player on the team to register multiple goals on the season.
Head Coach Matt Spear knows his team will welcome the return to their home turf.
“After an exciting, but long road trip last weekend, it will be great to play again in Alumni Stadium,” he said. “I know the guys are looking forward to putting forth a great performance after a full, solid week of training.”
Davidson enters the match with a 1-3 record on the year, and has an even 1-1 record at Alumni Stadium. This will be the seventh meeting all-time between the Wildcats and the Panthers, with Davidson holding a 4-1-1 lead in the series. The last time these two squads faced off was in 2003, when the 'Cats took a 1-0 victory in High Point.
High Point tied Longwood University last Wednesday to move to 1-2-1, with their victory coming in the season opener at home against the Elon Phoenix. Statistically, they are led by junior Chris Shrum, who has two goals and an assist on the year, and freshman Karo Okiomah, who has two goals in his rookie campaign. Spear says his team knows that the Panthers will be a quality opponent.
“High Point has already shown a good level of play, in a narrow 3-2 preseason loss away to Charlotte and a great season-opening home win against Elon from the SoCon,” he said.
With seven different players having recorded at least one point so far this year, the 'Cats have made a habit out of sharing the offensive load. No player has more than one assist, and only Turner has multiple scores. Fellow junior Robert O'Donnell has both an assist and a goal, with senior Whitey Bolan has the team's other scoring strike. Junior goalkeeper Robby Goldsberry has 15 saves in three matches, and has picked up the team's only shut-out in the win over Marshall.
For those who cannot make it out to the stadium, the match will be broadcast via live streaming video and audio, which can be found on DavidsonWildcats.com.
