DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson football coach Tripp Merritt announced today that the Wildcats will renew their series with Georgetown for four years, beginning in 2010 with a meeting at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium.
“Re-establishing this series is good for both schools and makes sense because it's just a natural rivalry,” said Merritt. “We are similar schools, near each other from a geographical standpoint, and we've played in a lot of intense, closely-contested games over the years that have really been classics.”
The Hoyas lead the all-time series 4-3, and four of the seven games have been decided by a touchdown or less with each school claiming two victories. The last meeting came at Georgetown in 2005, when Davidson recovered an on-sides kick late in the game to post a 10-3 win.
The first contest of the series was a 28-27 Wildcat victory at Georgetown in 1999, when the 'Cats scored 21 unanswered points in the last seven minutes for the win. Davidson posted a 41-17 home win in 2000 before Georgetown won the next four games of the series, including a 23-0 victory at Richardson Stadium in 2004, the last time Davidson was shut out at home.
Davidson opens the 2008 campaign at UNC?Pembroke Sept. 6, at 6 p.m. The Wildcats return 46 letterwinners and 17 starters to the 2008 team, including leading passer Ryan Alexander and their top-3 rushers in Chad Barnes, Justin Williams and Kenny Mantuo. Eight defensive starters are back as well, including three of the top-5 tacklers in Matt Easton, Peter Bakke and Kwame Som-Pimpong.
