DAVIDSON, N.C. – This weekend, Davidson Men's Soccer team will begin their season in grand fashion when they host four of the east's top teams for the 2008 Davidson adidias Classic at Alumni Stadium. The Wildcats will take the field for their season-opener on Friday, August 29 when they take on cross-county rival Charlotte at 7:15 p.m.
Joining Davidson and Charlotte in the tournament will be Marshall University and SoCon-rival College of Charleston, who will open play on Friday at 5 p.m. Then on Sunday, the 'Cats will face off against Marshall at 1 p.m., followed by Charlotte and Charleston at 3:15.
Coming into the season, Davidson returns a multitude of experience, with 19 letterwinners coming back, including seven starters, one of the highest numbers in the Southern Conference. The Wildcats are led by senior co-captain Cameron Griffin, who will anchor the defense, and sophomore midfielder Alex Caskey, the top returning scorer from last season. Caskey was the team leader in minutes and assists, and second in points on the squad as a freshman. Davidson will also look to eight newcomers to add youth and excitement to the team.
In keeping with the tradition of scheduling some of the nation's toughest opponents year in and year out, Head Coach Matt Spear is starting his team off with not only a quality team in Charlotte, but also a team that makes its home a mere 30 miles away from the Davidson campus. Spear knows that this game will be a good starting point for his team, and a chance to get the season started in an environment that is sure to be powerful.
“The team is pumped to feed off a successful preseason and to sink our teeth into the real games,” he said. “Of course starting out with Charlotte only intensifies our fervor. There will definitely be a great crowd, and I know the air will be electric.”
This will be the fifth consecutive year that the Wildcats will host the adidas Classic, racking up a 5-3 record over that span, including two seasons of undefeated play in the tournament. Last year, the 'Cats dropped a pair of matches to St. Mary's and San Jose State, with the latter in a double-overtime thriller.
Fans who are unable to make it to Alumni Stadium this weekend will be able to follow all the games via live stats, and can also log onto Davidson Athletics' live streaming audio and video at DavidsonWildcats.com.
