Davidson Men's Soccer Tabbed Seventh in Preseason SoCon Poll

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson College men's soccer team, who boasts 19 returning letterwinners, including seven starters, was picked to finish seventh in the preseason Southern Conference poll, as selected by the league's head coaches and released today by the conference office.
Furman, which finished 2007 with a record of 19-4 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, captured six of the eight first-place votes and finished with 47 total points. UNC Greensboro picked up one first-place vote and 40 points to finish second in the preseason balloting. The Spartans finished 2007 with a record of 11-8-2 and posted a 4-3 mark in league play. College of Charleston came in third with 38 points and one first-place vote. The Cougars finished second in the SoCon last season with a 6-1 record in league play.
Elon garnered 34 points to rank fourth in the preseason poll. The Phoenix were the fourth SoCon team to finish 2007 with a winning record (8-7-4) and tied UNC Greensboro for third place with a 4-3 mark in conference play. Appalachian State tallied 23 points to earn fifth place in the poll. Georgia Southern edged out the Wildcats for sixth place with 16 points, and Wofford closed out the poll with 11 points.
The Conference also announced the 11-member preseason All-SoCon team, with eight of the 11 players named also earning postseason honors in 2007.
Davidson, who is coming off a 4-14-1 record a year ago, will look to use their extensive experience to improve on their mark this season. The 'Cats open up their 2008 campaign this Friday night, August 29, when they host the 2008 Davidson adidas Classic at Alumni Stadium. Davidson will be the second game of the night when they match up against cross-town rival Charlotte at 7:15 p.m. Prior to that match, Marshall will face off against College of Charleston, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Then on Sunday, August 31, the Wildcats will close out their weekend against Marshall, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
