DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Coming off a 2007 campaign that saw them tie the school record for wins in a single season, the Davidson women's soccer team opens their 2008 year with a home opener against Virginia Tech at Alumni Stadium on Saturday Aug. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
The Matchup
Davidson is coming off a 14-5-1 overall season in 2007 that saw it go 8-1-1 in Southern Conference play and advance to the semifinals. It's the first time the Wildcats open the season at home since the 2004 year when it picked up a 1-0 win over cross-county rival Charlotte. Virginia Tech had just its second winning season in program history when it finished 8-7-3 last year.
The All-Time Series
Davidson holds a slim 3-2-1 record against the Hokies since the two teams first met back in 1993. The last meeting between the two schools was in 2002 when the Wildcats scored a 2-1 overtime home win.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson hit the 10-win plateau for the fourth straight year in 2007 with a 14-5-1 record ... the 14 wins tied a school record, matching the 2000 and 2005 squads ... 'Cats were 8-2 at home last season ... SoCon coaches' picked the Wildcats to finish 2nd in the preseason poll .... the Wildcats return 19 letterwinners and nine starters ... leading scorer junior Kyri Bye-Nagel, who is a preseason all-conference pick, returns after leading the team with career highs of 12 goals and 25 points, ranking her second and third, respectively, in the SoCon ... Last year, Davidson's defense was tied for first in the SoCon in goals allowed with just 17 given up and were first overall in goals against average at 0.82

Gray earned All-ACC Second Team honors last season ... Virginia Tech was 5-5 on the road a year ago.

Davidson will play the first of back-to-back in-season tournaments when it heads to Macon, Ga. to participate in the Mercer Tournament. The Wildcats will play Mercer and Kennesaw State, Aug. 29 & 31.
