DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson College head coach Annette Watts has announced today the addition of Marlena Murphy as assistant coach for the women's basketball program for the 2008-09 season.
Murphy comes to Davidson after a solid four-year playing career at Campbell University. Her senior year saw her lead the team in scoring (12.4 ppg) and rebounding (9.8 rpg). A second-team All-Atlantic Sun pick this past season, Murphy led the conference in rebounding and ranked 19th nationally with her 9.8 average. She led the team 22 times in rebounding and finished her career ranked ninth overall in school history with an average of 8.1.
“Marlena brings a recent player's perspective to our staff as she just finished her collegiate career and she will be working with our post players,” said Watts, who will be entering her eighth season at Davidson. In addition to working with the post, Murphy will also be dealing with film exchange and film breakdown of opponents.
A native of Fayetteville, N.C., Murphy was named to the All-Atlantic Sun First Team and was the team MVP as a junior when she averaged 12.1 points per game and finished second in the conference with a 9.4 rebounding average. She was twice named to the all-state team for North Carolina during her four-year career and garnered MVP honors this past year at the Elon Tournament.
Murphy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Campbell in 2008.
Davidson concluded the 2007-08 season with another successful campaign under the guidance of coach Watts. The 'Cats won 19 games this past year, the second-most in program history, while notching 13 victories in the Southern Conference on their way to finishing third in the league.
