DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson College head coach Annette Watts has announced the addition of Kelly Morrone as assistant coach for the women's basketball program for the 2008-09 season.
Morrone joins the Wildcat staff after serving as an assistant coach the past three years at the University at Buffalo. This past season, Morrone helped coach a UB defense that finished second in the Mid-American Conference in field goal percentage defense and third in scoring defense. As a team, the Bulls finished with 15 wins in 2007-08, the most since the 2002-03 campaign.
Morrone primarily handled working with the Bulls' guards during her three years, while being responsible for film exchange and breakdown and assisting in scouting a number of Buffalo's opponents.
"Kelly brings a lot of energy and knowledge of the game to our staff," said Watts, who last season became the all-time winningest coach in program history. "She has the personality to be the recruiting coordinator we need and her playing experience at the University of South Carolina will serve her well as she directs the development of our guards. Her keen eye will allow us to get top caliber players on our roster and her desire to be a champion meets our goals of excellence here at Davidson. I'm excited to have Kelly with us and to help continue the success we have established for this program."
Morrone began her coaching career during the 2004-05 season as the assistant girl's varsity basketball coach at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, S.C.
A three-year team captain, Morrone had a stellar four-year playing career at South Carolina. She played in 114 games, starting 70 of them, and averaged 8.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.2 steals per game. During her senior year, Morrone was tied for the team lead in scoring average at 11.7 points per game. She was one the Gamecocks' top three-point shooters, making 40.7 percent of her shots during her senior season, good for fifth-best in a single campaign, on 81-of-199 with her 81 made three-pointers ranking fourth-most in a single season.
For her career, Morrone made 238 three-pointers and drained 36.9 percentage of her shots from behind the arc, placing her third all-time in both categories in the record books. Her career high of eight three-pointers at Duke Nov. 25, 2001 are the second-most in a single game, while she holds the record for the most treys in a single game on the Gamecocks' home court, Colonial Center, with seven.
A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Morrone graduated from South Carolina in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in sports and entertainment management and earned a minor in business. She was a four-year Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll team member.
Davidson concluded the 2007-08 season with another successful campaign under the guidance of coach Watts. The 'Cats won 19 games this past year, the second-most in program history, while notching 13 victories in the Southern Conference on their way to finishing third in the league.
