'Cats Open Series at UNCG with 9-5 Victory

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Matt Webb was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a homer, and Thomas Middour allowed two runs in six innings on the mound to lead Davidson to a 9-5 SoCon baseball victory at UNC Greensboro Wednesday night.
Zach Kayne was 2-for-4 with a triple, and Chase FitzPatrick went 2-for-3 for the Wildcats (11-36, 3-22 SoCon). Chris FitzPatrick was 2-for-4, and Tommy Piacenza collected four RBIs and a home run. Middour fanned six and allowed just three hits on the hill.
The Wildcats took the lead in the second inning when Piacenza belted a three-run home run to right center field.
Leading 3-1, Davidson scored four runs in the fifth inning to open a 7-1 advantage. Brett Shore started the frame with a single and stole second. Webb drove him in with a homer with one out, and Danny Weiss, Chase FitzPatrick and Sam Payne followed with consecutive singles to load the bases. Tommy Piacenza drew a walk to score a run, and Chris FitzPatrick scored another with a sacrifice fly.
Webb doubled home Brett Shore in the sixth, and Chase FitzPatrick drove in Webb with a double as the 'Cats extended their lead to 9-1.
Leading 9-2, Davidson was forced to fend off a bit of a rally from UNCG (30-24, 14-11 SoCon) in the ninth. Adam Deleo singled to start the inning, and Ed Jayjack followed with a single. Deleo scored on a groundout, and Ricky Orton plated two runs with a double with two outs, making the margin 9-5.
Davidson brought Mike Frongello on, and the freshman got Sean Snell to ground out to end the game. The victory broke a 12-game losing skid for Davidson and was the 'Cats first victory on the road this season.
The teams will continue the series tomorrow at UNCG Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
