CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Zach Kayne was 3-for-5 with two RBIs to lead Davidson, but the Wildcats fell 8-4 at Western Carolina in the final contest of a three-game set Sunday afternoon at Hennon Stadium.
Eight different players had base hits for Davidson (8-18, 1-8 SoCon) as the 'Cats registered 10. Davidson left nine runners on base and could not take advantage of five errors by the Catamounts (15-15, 5-4 SoCon).
With the Wildcats trailing 6-3 in the sixth, two Western Carolina errors helped get Chris FitzPatrick to third, and Tommy Piacenza drove in the junior with a single as Davidson trimmed the margin to 6-4.
A double play helped the Catamounts get out of the inning, and they put up two runs in the bottom of the frame with consecutive walks with the bases loaded, making the margin 8-4. Davidson left two runners on in the seventh and three in the ninth and could not generate any runs.
After Western Carolina went ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Davidson came back to tie the game in the top of the fifth.
Pat Brady singled with runners on first and second to score one run, and Kayne's single to center field with two outs and the bases juiced plated two more runs. Western Carolina answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Davidson returns to action with a game at Virginia Tech Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Hokies posted a 14-10 comeback victory in the first meeting between the squads this season Feb. 27. Following Tuesday's non-league game, the 'Cats return to conference action at The Citadel for a three-game series this weekend.
