BOONE, N.C. – Brett Shore went 3-for-4 from the plate, and Danny Weiss collected two hits and three RBIs, but the Davidson baseball team fell 5-4 in the last contest of a three-game SoCon set at Appalachian State Sunday afternoon.
Matt Webb also had two hits for the Wildcats (10-28, 2-16), and Chase FitzPatrick registered a hit.
Webb led off the second with a double and scored on a Hugh Eden grounder as Davidson took a 1-0 lead. Jerod Faggart homered for Appalachian State (24-22, 8-10) to tie the score in the home half of the inning.
The 'Cats went ahead 3-1 in the third when Weiss singled with runners on second and third and two outs. But the Mountaineers answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame, keyed by three-run home run from Brett Stewart.
Davidson made the margin 5-4 in the fifth inning with a two-out rally. Shore ignited the spurt with a single, and Kayne walked, setting the table for Weiss, who delivered an RBI single.
The Wildcats left a runner on in the seventh and eighth innings, and Chase FitzPatrick led off the ninth with a single. But reliever Adam Mills got the next three Davidson hitters in order to preserve the win.
Aubrey Edens tossed eight innings for the Mountaineers, giving up seven hits and four runs to earn his third victory. The 'Cats got two scoreless innings a piece from freshmen relievers Andy Bass and Matt Sliwiak to stay within striking distance.
Davidson is back in action Wednesday, April 30, when they travel to Wake Forest for a 3 p.m. contest.
