Lacrosse Caps Off Record Season With 22-4 Win Over Howard on Senior Day

DAVIDSON, N.C. –– The Davidson women's lacrosse team finished off a record season by scoring a season-high 22 goals, one off the school record, and earned a 22-4 win over visiting Howard on Senior Day at Richardson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats closed out the season by setting a single-season school record with a mark of 11-5, breaking the 1997 & 2006 records of 9-7. They also earlier in the year set a single-season best with a six game-winning streak. Davidson's .688 winning percentage was also a record.
Howard fell to 2-10 on the year.
On a day when its seven seniors were honored before the game, Davidson was led by those seniors in picking up its biggest victory of the year. Five of them combined to score 10 of the 22 goals and two of them picked up six of the Wildcats' eight assists, which was a new team season-high for assists.
Seniors Sarah Walter and Emily Palmer each found the back of the net three times, while fellow classmates, Emily Diefendorf (2), Kate McDonald (1) and Kelly Finnigan (1) also put their names in the scorer's book. Walter matched her career-high with four assists in the game and set a new personal-best as she closed out the year with 15. Also picking up assists for Davidson was Palmer (2) and Cook (2).
Cook and Walter set the tone early for Davidson, as Walter set up Cook twice at the 29:03 mark and 25:12 and the Wildcats were off and running. Cook led the Wildcats with a career-best four goals and finished the afternoon with six points, another personal-best.
Howard's Sakita Holley stopped the five-goal run by the Wildcats, but sophomore Jen Crawford got the 'Cats right back in the scoring column with a strike at the 19:04 mark for a 6-1 lead. Crawford scored three goals on the afternoon and concluded the year with a career-and team-high 36 to go along with three assists for 39 points.
Davidson as a team had four players score 30 or more goals on the year, with Diefendorf (34), Cook (33) and junior Becky Horton (30) joining Crawford.
After Holley's second score of the half, Davidson exploded for eight unanswered goals and took a 15-2 lead into halftime. Juniors Heather Frohman and Claire O'Shea each registered their second goals of the season during the rally, and fellow classmate Callie Seymour scored her 10th of the season.
Davidson pushed the lead out to as many as 17 goals in the second period when freshman Danielle Ruggieri scored her second career collegiate goal at the 9:46 mark and went on take the 22-4 victory.
Though she didn't score in her final game as a Wildcat, senior Anna Mitchell played outstanding on the defensive end. She picked up two draw controls, had two caused turnovers and one groundball. She finished the season with team highs of 37 groundballs and 23 caused turnovers.
The Wildcats' final senior, goalie Laura Johnson, capped off her career year by winning her 11th game of the season and recording three saves. Johnson also set a new personal-best with 127 saves for the year and ended her career ranked fourth in the record books with 358. In addition to etching her name in the career saves record book, Johnson also set the new single-season record with an 8.79 goals against average.
Davidson also set a new single-season record by allowing just 143 goals, breaking the 2007 mark of 146.
