Simihaian's and Myers' Strong Seasons Leads To All-SoCon Honors in M. Tennis

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Coming off their first winning season since 2001, the Davidson men's tennis team placed two players on the All-Southern Conference first and second teams as senior Flaviu Simihaian (Rasaud, Romania) and junior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) each garnered their first career all-league honors as voted on by the coaches, Friday, Apr. 18, as announced by the SoCon.
Simihaian earned a spot on the league's first team and became the first Wildcat to earn a nod on the first team since Rob Haywood in 2003. Myers was named to the All-SoCon second team with a spot at the No. 6 singles position as the coaches selected the team by individual positions.
The Wildcats concluded the regular season with a mark of 14-7 overall and 5-4 in SoCon action. The 14 wins were the most since the 1999 squad went 15-9, and of the 14 wins, 10 of them came at home where the 'Cats were 10-2 on the year.
Simihaian has been the Wildcats' main No. 1 singles player three of the past four years. In his final campaign at Davidson, Simihaian set a personal-best with 12 wins as he concluded the regular season with a 12-8 singles mark. He closed out the regular season strong, winning seven of his last nine matches. Simihaian was also 5-4 against league opponents, earning four of the wins at the end of the season.
In addition to his strong singles play, Simihaian added another 14 wins in doubles action with 11 of them coming at the No. 1 spot were he teamed up with junior Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) for an 11-6 record.
Pacing Davidson in singles play was Myers with a team-leading 17 victories, doubling his career win total. Of his 17 wins, 11 of them came at the No. 6 singles position, while he added another six (6-0) at the No. 5 spot. Myers closed out his league matches with a perfect 9-0 record, finishing off his perfect run with a 6-4, 6-0 win against Furman last Saturday.
Assisting Myers on his way to a personal-best 17-4 record were a seven-and eight-match winning streaks throughout the regular season.
Furman's Andy Juc and head coach Paul Scarpa were voted on as the Player and Coach of the Year, while Oscar Podlewski of Elon was named the Freshman of the Year.
In search of their 10th Southern Conference tournament title, the No. 5-seeded Davidson men's tennis team will open the SoCon tournament today against No. 4 Appalachian State at 10 a.m. in the quarterfinals. The Wildcats will be seeking some payback against Appalachian State after dropping a 4-3 road contest on Apr. 11. The doubles point was the difference were the Mountaineers swept all three positions.
