
#3 'Cats Open SoCon W. Tennis Tournament on Friday

DAVIDSON, N.C. - After concluding the regular season with a 7-2 Southern Conference record, the Davidson women's tennis team earned the No. 3 seed and will open tournament play against the sixth-seeded Wofford Terriers on Friday, Apr. 18 at 12:30 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.
Davidson finished the regular season with its seventh straight winning campaign at 17-5 that included a five-match winning streak along with two four-match winning streaks. The Wildcats also finished with a 10-1 mark at home, the fourth year in a row its tallied at least 10 wins on its home courts.
Wofford enters the tournament at 12-7 overall and earned the sixth seed by way of its 4-5 league record. The Terriers dropped their last four matches, including a 6-1 decision against the Wildcats on Apr. 11 on the road.
The 'Cats own the all-time series with a 14-1 record after this year's 6-1 win. The two teams last met in the SoCon Tournament on Apr. 22, 2005 when Davidson took a 4-0 decision in the quarterfinals on its way to the finals where it dropped its championship match to Furman.
Six Wildcats finished with over 10 singles wins in the regular season, led by senior Kim Whelan's (Sewickley, Pa.) 16-5 record. The senior, who was SoCon Player of the Week on Feb. 29, rattled off a two six-match winning streaks during the season, and picked up seven wins each at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions.
Right behind Whelan was senior Meredith Skeeters (Greensboro, N.C.) at 14-3 that included a team-best tying 11-match winning streak on her way to her 14 wins. Skeeters also won SoCon Player of the Week honors, garnering the award on Mar. 18.
Matching Skeeters' winning streak was sophomore Teresa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.), who finished 12-2 overall and 6-1 in league matches. Wang was also one of six 'Cats to net six or more league wins with Whelan picking up a team-high seven victories in league play.
Senior Kelsey Linville (Columbus, Ohio), junior Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) recorded 12, 13 and 12 singles wins, respectively, to give the 'Cats their six players in double digits in wins for singles play.
Davidson as a team went 96-36 overall in singles play, picking up 40 of them in SoCon action. It was just as good on doubles matches, sporting a 44-18 mark and 18-9 in league play.
Should the Wildcats advance to the semifinals, they would play the winner of No. 2 College of Charleston and No. 7 Georgia Southern/No. 10 Western Carolina on Apr. 19 at 3 p.m.
