DAVIDSON, N.C. - The No. 66 Furman Paladins spoiled Davidson's Senior Day in its final regular-season match when they took a 7-0 decision at the Knobloch Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon in women's Southern Conference tennis action.
The match marked the final time seniors Kelsey Linville (Columbus, Ohio), Meredith Skeeters (Greensboro, N.C.) and Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.) will play at home.
The Wildcats saw their five-match winning streak come to an end as they closed out the regular season with a 17-5 mark and 7-2 in league play. It's the second straight season the 'Cats have finished 7-2 in the SoCon. Davidson has not defeated Furman in the regular season since 1985. The Wildcats' last win against the Paladins was in 2003 when they defeated them in the semifinals of the SoCon tournament.
Furman claimed the regular season title yet again with the win to go 9-0 in the SoCon, and improved to 16-5 overall.
The Paladins once again had Davidson's number, taking two of the three doubles matches to open up a 1-0 lead. Whelan and freshman Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) took home the lone doubles win for Davidson with an 8-6 decision at No. 3. The duo finished the regular season at 9-3.
From there, Furman rattled off wins at all six singles positions for the 7-0 victory.
Davidson did not go down without a fight though, as all six matches were fairly close. Junior Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) forced a three-set match and sophomore Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) nearly forced a third setter as well, before falling in a tie breaker in the second set against Monica Arguello at No. 2.
Sophomore Treasa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.) saw her 11-match win streak come to an end after falling in a super tie-breaker, 10-8, to Lauren Tomory at No. 5.
Davidson will now head to Charleston, S.C. on Apr 17 for the start of the SoCon tournament.
