BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Competing as an individual, freshman Ryan Crum fired a one-under 71 in his final round to place tied for ninth on the individual leaderboard, while the Davidson men's golf team also placed ninth following a 306 on day two of the 2008 Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic hosted by Campbell University. The 36-hole event was played on the 6,703-yard, par 72 Keith Hills Country Club layout.
Crum, a product of South Salem, N.Y., and Saint Stephen's High School, opened with a 74 before finishing with a two-day score of 145 (+1), just four strokes off Josh Gallman of USC Upstate's 141 (-3), which took individual medalist honors.
Fellow first-year Wildcat Robert Mayo finished just outside the Top 10 with a 36-hole total of 146 (71-75).
Other Davidson competitors included David Fowler (57 / 156), Michael Saari (T-62nd / 158) and Bobby Urso (T-62nd / 158).
The Fighting Camels (294-289=583) rallied from five strokes back to take the team title by one shot over in-state foe Elon (289-295=583).
Davidson will enjoy a three-week break before returning to the course at the USA Spring Golf Classic hosted by the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Ala.
