BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Both Robert Mayo and the Davidson men's golf team sits tied for seventh in the standings after day one of the 2008 Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic hosted by Campbell University. The 36-hole event is being played on the 6,703-yard, par 72 Keith Hills Country Club layout.
Mayo, a freshman from Austin, Texas, fired an opening round one-under 71 to find himself four strokes off the lead with 18 holes left to play. Fellow first-year Wildcat Bobby Urso also sits inside the Top 25 on the individual leaderboard following a three-over 75.
As a club, Davidson carded a 301, which places them just one shot out of the top five.
Other Davidson competitors include Chris Rollins (T-40 / 77), David Fowler (T-51 / 78) and Michael Saari (T-51 / 78).
Elon leads the 15-school tourney with a one-over 289, while Phoenix senior Jimmy Lytle collected a five-under 67 on the day, leading all individuals.
Florida Gulf Coast sits in second place just in front of Campbell with a 293.
Tuesday's final round will begin with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.
