DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson men's soccer team will welcome eight talented ambitious incoming freshmen for the 2008 fall campaign as announced by Head Coach Matt Spear, who returns for his eighth season at the helm of his alma mater.
According to Coach Spear: “We are excited about this group. They add talent and depth in several positions. I expect they will impact and accelerate our level of play from the first day. They must work hard between now and our pre-season in August to make a smooth transition to the college game. In order to do well, their confidence, attitude and ability to handle adversity will be as crucial as their talent.”
"Five of the student-athletes currently play for US Soccer Academy club teams, three were State Cup champions last summer, and six have participated for ODP teams," said Spear.
Garrett Bostwick

Coach Spear: “Garrett has played for the top team in his age group with CASL for several years. So that guarantees that he has been very well coached, has tremendous training habits, and has been exposed to big-time competition opportunities. Garrett's conditioning is excellent as he loves to get up and down the field on the flanks. He also has quality experience playing as a defender, so his versatility is a bonus.”
Luke Boulding

Height: 6-1
Weight: 160
Hometown: Durham, North Carolina
Club Team: CASL Elite

Coach Spear: “Luke has locked down the right defender spot for an excellent CASL team, but he's also a tremendous central defender for his high school team, so we will be looking at him for all the spots in our back line. He is continuing to grow physically into what we expect can be a dominating presence.”
Kyle Engle

Coach Spear: "Kyle is a strong, physical forward that has great instincts for winning the ball and seizing opportunities. He fights for any ball that comes near him and is extremely determined in the goal mouth. He's also very good in receiving entry passes with his back to goal, and can hold defenders off very well. As he learns the nuances of goal-scoring at the NCAA level, he is going to be a constant threat on the field."

He also has a solid sense of the tactics and positioning involved in playing central defender. His height will also helps us improve in the air. We enjoyed Hunter when he attended our summer camp - he trains hard and is very coachable. Plus the fact that he wants to pursue a career in medicine makes Davidson a great fit."

Coach Spear: "Greg is a very steady defender whose greatest strength is not getting beat 1vs1. He thrives in locking down on talented strikers and eliminating their strengths and scoring chances. We like the fact that Greg has played a lot at left defender for his excellent club team. It's a position for which we needed more talent and depth."

Chip's skill set is solid, and getting better and better as he is starting to hit his stride with dedicated training and in competitive matches. He is a very exciting and promising addition to our program."

Technically he is very sharp and that has been strengthened through an early morning soccer program he does before school. That shows maturity and strong motivation. Plus he has played against the very best that Region IV (West Coast) offers in Regional competitions, the Red Bull League, and most recently the US Academy system.”
