DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After averaging nearly 23 points in two games last week and leading the Davidson women's basketball team to two Southern Conference wins, junior Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) was awarded the Wildcats' first SoCon Player of the Week honor this year, as voted on by the conference's sports information directors.
Thompson guided the 'Cats to wins over Furman (67-57) and Appalachian State (95-75) during the week of Dec. 2-9 as Davidson started league play 2-0 for the third straight year.
The Wildcats' starting point guard averaged 22.5 points per game for the week, shooting 56 percent from the field (14-25) that included a blistering 64.7 percent from downtown (11-17). She also pulled down an average of close to six rebounds and dished out a total of 13 assists (6.6 apg) in Davidson's two wins.
The week was highlighted by a career-best 35-point output at Appalachian State last Saturday that put her in both the school and conference record books. She tied two other Wildcats, Jennifer O'Brien (Mar. 3, 2000) and Heather McKee (Jan. 22, 1985), for most points in a single game in the Wildcat record books.
Assisting her 35-point outburst was Thompson's record shooting from behind the arc as the sharp-shooter nailed 9-of-12 shots from downtown. The nine three-pointers set a new school and SoCon bench mark, while her 12 attempts from behind the arc tied a single-game school record, matching two other former Wildcats.
After starting the game 1-of-4 from three-land, Thompson finished a perfect 8-for-8 in helping the Wildcats tie a school record for most three-pointers in a single game with 13. Davidson first set the record back on Feb. 26, 2004 at Furman.
Thompson, who played all 40 minutes vs. the Mountaineers, finished out the game hitting 10-of-15 shots from the field, including her 9-for-12 effort from behind the three-line, and added a perfect 6-of-6 showing from the charity stripe. She also hauled in six rebounds and dished out six assists.
The 35 points by Thompson were the most scored by a Wildcat since Emily Callahan dropped in 33 against Appalachian State on Jan. 18, 2003.
Her week started off by reaching double digits in points for the first time this year with a 10-point game against the Paladins, one of three 'Cats to reach double figures in the 67-57 win in Davidson's home opener. Thompson also pulled down five rebounds and assisted on seven of her teammates baskets, setting a season-high in assists.
For the season, Thompson ranks third on the team with a 9.6 point-per-game average and paces the Wildcats with 35 assists, which ranks tops in the conference. She is tied with Ashley Lax with 14 treys and is a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe, pushing her consecutive free throw streak to 46, dating back to last year.
