DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball team continues its cross-county rivalry with the Charlotte 49ers when the two school matchup against each other on Tuesday evening at John M. Belk Arena in a non-conference tilt.
The Opening Tip
Davidson (3-5), winners of its past two contests, plays host to Charlotte (6-2) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The series is all knotted up at 10-apiece after Charlotte captured a 69-53 win last year on their home floor. The 49ers have won four of the past five meetings dating back to Nov. 25, 2003.
Scouting the Wildcats
•Davidson registered its second straight Southern Conference win with a season-high 95 points in a 20-point triumph at Appalachian State last Saturday.
•Davidson snapped a five-game losing streak on the road with the win at ASU.
•The 20-pt. win was the Wildcats biggest victory since a 76-50 triumph over UNCG on Feb. 16, 2008.
•For the third time in the past four games, Davidson placed at least three players in double figures.
•Alex Thompson led four players in double digits at ASU with a game for the record books, tying a school record with 35 points. She set a school bench mark and SoCon mark with nine three-pointers, finishing 9-of-12. Overall, the junior was a career-best 10-of-15 from the field and sank all six of her shots at the charity stripe. She also dished out six assists and has 21 in the past four games.
•The Wildcats as a team matched a single-game school and SoCon record with 13 three-balls (13-23).
•Not to be overshadowed by Thompson was Mercedes Robinson with her third double-double (13 pts./10 rebs.) of the season and Monica Laune with a career-high 15 points off the bench. Laune is averaging 9.6 ppg and 4.3 rpg in her last three contests off the bench.
•The Wildcats also had season bests in field goal percentage (46.8), free throws (24), assists (22) and committed a season-low 12 turnovers.
•Robinson paces the Davidson offense with a 14.3 ppg average and an even nine rebounds per game. Five times she has led the team in scoring, with three of them being both in points and rebounds.
•The Wildcats will put its seven-game home winning streak on the line Tuesday vs. the 49ers. It's the longest home streak since the 1998-99 team set a school record by winning nine straight.
•The Wildcats have won two of their past three home games against Charlotte. Overall, the series is knotted at 10-apiece.
•The last meeting vs. Charlotte saw Robinson register a double-double as Davidson lost 69-53.
Scouting the 49ers
•Charlotte picked up its third win in a row, and fifth in the past six games, with a 72-50 victory at UNC Asheville on Saturday.
•Three 49ers hit for double figures, led by Aysha Jones' 19 points and a double-double from Danielle Burgin (13 pts./10 rebs.). In all, nine players etched their names in the scorer's book.
•Burgin's 10-board day vs. Bulldogs was the 20th time in her career she hit double figures in rebounds. The senior post player has done it three times this year and leads the team in rebounds per game at 8.4.
•Charlotte sports three players averaging double digits in points per game, with Jones tallying a 15.1 ppg average to lead the way. Last year she was held to just four points vs. the Wildcats.
•Ashley Spriggs was named A-10 Player of the Week last week after guiding Charlotte to the Hoops For the Cure Tournament Title with wins over Fresno State and SMU. She was awarded MVP honors at the tournament.
•Six of the 49ers first eight games have been on the road as they are 3-1 in road games and 2-0 in neutral site games.
•Returning from last year's 18-14 team is eight of the 12 letterwinners, including four of the five starters who guided the 49ers to the Women's NIT.
•The 49ers were picked to finish 3rd in the A-10.
•In last year's meeting vs. the 'Cats, Burgin led three players in double figures with 18 points and hauled in a game-best 13 rebounds.
