GAMBIER, OHIO -- Sophomore Lindsey Martin and junior Nate Ladner smashed a pair of school records each, leading the way on a record-setting day at the Nike Invitational for the Davidson Wildcat swimming and diving teams.
Martin started her day with a new school record in the 200 free in the morning's preliminary session with a time of 1:52.80, before bettering the mark again in the evening session with a third-place time of 1:50.59. She swam the previous best of 1:52.89 in November. Martin also bettered her own school record in the 50 free with a runner-up time of 22.99, shaving time off her 23.53 from the meet a season ago.
Ladner also had an outstanding day, kicking off the day with a school-record time of 20.96 in the 50 free, the first Wildcat male to swim under 21 seconds in the event. Fiete Stegger swam the previous best of 21.10 at the CCSA Championships last season. Ladner finished sixth in the event in the evening session with a time of 21.05. The breaststroker also set a record in the 100 breast with a time of 56.13, finishing third in the super final, bettering Matt Buck's mark of 56.21 dating back to Feb. 17, 1995.
Senior Andrew Carlson also set a new school record in the 200 free with a 1:40.89 in the morning's prelims, before finishing fourth in the super final with a time of 1:40.96. Senior Merritt Peele swam the previous program-best time of 1:41.28 at the 2007 CAAs.
Freshman Geoffrey Peitz set the final record of the day, swimming a Davidson-best time of 1:52.86 and finishing eighth in the 200 fly. He bettered his own record of 1:52.92 from November.
The Wildcat men also set a pair of school relay records on the second day of competition, turning in all-time bests in the 200 free and 400 medley relays. The relay team of Peitz, Ladner, junior Brad Carman and senior Miguel Rodriguez finished fifth in the 400 medley with a time of 3:24.62, better than the previous time of 3:24.81 from the 2008 CCSAs.
In the 200 free, Carlson, Ladner, sophomore Bryan Droll and Rodriguez turned in a third-place time of 1:23.10 for an all-time best in the 200 free relay, beating the time of 1:24.07 from last season's CCSA championships.
Competition will resume tomorrow with prelims in the morning and conclude with the evening session.
