DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Fresh off leading the Davidson women's basketball team to its third straight Southern Conference victory to begin league play, senior Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) was named the SoCon Player of the Week for Dec. 9-16 as voted on by the conference's sports information directors today.
It's Robinson's third career player of the week honor and marks the second week in a row that a Davidson player has picked up the award. Junior Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) garnered the award on Dec. 9.
Robinson picked up her fourth career double-double, 19 points and 11 rebounds, in leading the Wildcats to an 84-66 win over Western Carolina last Sunday as the Wildcats opened league play at 3-0 for the second time in the past three years. Earlier in the week, the senior post-player scored a team-high 14 points in a defeat to Charlotte.
For the week, Robinson recorded averages of 16.5 points per game and an even nine rebounds a contest. On the year, she paces the league in rebounds per game at nine, while averaging a team-best 14.7 points, good for fourth-best in the SoCon.
Sunday saw Robinson help Davidson to put away Western Carolina in the second half when she netted 14 of her 19 total points in the half, and sparked an 18-5 run midway through the period with nine points in the spurt as the Wildcats turned a six-point lead into a 64-45 advantage on their way to the 18-point victory.
In addition to her double-double vs. the Catamounts, Robinson also tied her career-best in steals with five to move her season total to a team-high 24, which is also the most in the league.
Robinson has scored in double figures eight times this year, including the past six games. Her double-double on Sunday was her second in the past three games and pushed her career total 21.
Davidson (4-6 overall) plays two more games before a nine-day Christmas break with both games taking place in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Wildcats will first square-off against Xavier this Friday at 12 p.m., and then finish out its trip to Ohio with a 2 p.m. contest vs. Cincinnati on Sunday. This will be the 'Cats first meetings against Xavier and Cincinnati in their 30-year program history.
