DAVIDSON, N.C. - After strong regular seasons, sophomore Alex Caskey was named to the 2008 All-Southern Conference First Team, and Greg Macnamara and Hunter Hayes both received All-Freshman Team honors, as announced by the conference office today.
Caskey, who became the Wildcats' first all-conference team member since 2005, led the team in assists and points during the regular season, and was tied for the top spot with three goals. The Dunwoody, Ga. native saw action in all 18 of the team's contests, and was on the field for a team-high 1,546 minutes, while also being one of just five players to make the start in every match this year. He had one of his top statistical performances against High Point, a match in which he scored a goal and added an assist, having a hand in both of the team's scores on the night. He also added scoring strikes against UAB and Presbyterian, a match in which he also had both a goal and assist in the contest. While he has put up impressive stats both of his years at Davidson, head coach Matt Spear knows his impact goes beyond the numbers.
“Alex is a very special player for our team and in our program,” Spear said. “He's played the most minutes on the team in both his Freshman and Sophomore seasons. The other Conference coaches realize how good he is, and their game approach is often about containing his abilities.”
In their first year for the red and black, Hayes and Macnamara helped to anchor the Wildcat defense throughout the season on their way to being named to the SoCon's inaugural All-Freshman team. The two combined for over 1,800 minutes of action in their rookie campaigns, with Macnamara recording the game-winning goal in the team's opening SoCon victory over UNC?Greensboro, helping the 'Cats snap a six-game losing streak against the Spartans. Hayes made 11 starts in 13 appearances on the year, while playing all 90 minutes in a pair of matches, against nationally-ranked Georgetown and at the College of Charleston.
Spear knows that both of these players have been able to make an immediate impact in just their first year as collegians.
“It's a honor for Greg and Hunter to be recognized so early in their college careers,” he said. “They are talented, they have adjusted quickly to the college game, and this should only spur them on to further development and success.”
These three players will look to lead the Wildcats to a victory this weekend when they travel down to Statesboro, Ga. to take on Georgia Southern in the 2008 Southern Conference Tournament quaterfinals. Kick-off between the third-seeded Eagles and the sixth-seeded Wildcats is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday afternoon from Eagle Field. Davidson will be looking to avenge a 2-1 overtime loss to GSU?on Senior Day last month at Alumni Stadium, and Spear knows they will be facing a challenging task to move on in the tournament.
“Sunday's match at Georgia Southern will be a great battle, and an awesome opportunity for our team,” he said. “I know both teams will be ready and focused to be at their best and earn a critical victory. The fact that our team won at Georgia Southern in the regular season last Fall and just recently played them in such a close game gives us confidence, but Sunday will be a brand new day and the match is unique and very much up for grabs.”
