DAVIDSON, N.C.-- The Davidson Wildcat men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the first night of Davidson Invitational competition with a win in the women's 800 freestyle relay and an individual title for senior team-captain Merritt Peele in the 1650 freestyle.
The evening opened with a Davidson victory in the 800 freestyle relay. The team of Anna Stringfield, Courtney Sanders, Lindsey Martin and Jessica Delgehausen won in a new Davidson Invitational meet record time.
“The splits on that relay were super encouraging," head coach John Young said. "All four of those women should be proud of what they were able to accomplish as a team tonight. Their time is ahead of where we were when we set a college record last year at this meet [in this event].”
The next event, the men's 1650 freestyle, notched another Davidson victory, this time team-captain Merritt Peele in a winning time of 16:18.34. Brian Seo touched in 16:33.98 for third place, making him Davidson's 10th fastest ever performer in the event. Nate Ladner finished in eighth, and Colin Nelson finished in 13th, one spot behind the defending conference champion in the event.
“Merritt got us started right in the mile," Young said. "He executed well, and set up his finish, and pulled away for the victory. A nice swim for tonight.”
In the women's mile, Delgehausen took second in a 17:21.91. That time ranks her as Davidson's third best miler of all time and marks a lifetime best time by almost 23 seconds. Meagan Madden followed in ninth place, establishing herself in the top performer list as seventh all-time with her 17:45.56. She was followed by Caitlin Sheetz in 10th, and Alanna Ream in 12th.
“The female milers were tough tonight.," Young said. "Jessica had another exciting race, and her consistency in approach continues to pay off with great swims. The relay and the mile is a tough night, she was awesome.”
Rounding out the evening, the men's 800 freestyle relay took third place despite a time only 3-tenths off of their previous meet record. That swim was highlighted by a 1:42.34 anchoring effort by Curtis Chaney, who finished the race after Merritt Peele, Brian Seo and Geoffrey Peitz each had strong swims.
The women finish the evening in first place, ten points ahead of Old Dominion University, and 18 ahead of CCSA rival Gardner Webb.
The men sit five points back of Old Dominion, and 16 ahead of the bulldogs. Competition will resume tomorrow and conclude on Sunday.
